What topic comes to mind when you think of mental strength? It could be the girly version of not being so emotional and crying after running over a squirrel or more of mental toughness, mind over matter. When I thought about writing about mental strength, I envisioned the idea of being able to handle issues better. I searched on my friend Google "mental strength" one of the first few articles that popped up was a Forbes article. I was extremely curious to see what they had to say about my topic.
The article happened to talk about mental toughness. Professionals, whether it be an athlete or businessman, has to have a high degree of mental toughness to be successful. (If you're wondering why this was on Forbes, they used a soccer analogy to express the world of business) It's not what happens on the field, but instead your preparation. Preparation is not only physical, but mental. Here are the "Six Elements of Mental Toughness":
1) Flexibility
2) Responsiveness
3) Strength
4) Courage and ethics
5) Resiliency
6) Sportsmanship
Mental toughness is your ability to resist the urge of being down after disappointments.Another site, a body building site was saying to build something else that is key, your toughness. They four ways it suggested was:
1) Just be tough
2) be consistent
3)be competitive
4) be resolute (determined)
This is such a relevant topic for me and it's been a real struggle recently. Trying to stay strong mentally does not come easy for me and I'm going to try and dig into that a bit more.

ReplyDeleteWell if you look at my blog it seems like we have chosen pretty much the same topic haha. Remember when we gave the exam speeches last year, we pretty much picked the same story as well... strange. I am super excited to see where your blog goes since obviously i am interested in the same topic/idea. Torres was a interesting person to make a parallel to. I hope you make more soccer references. My blog is about self improvements and i'm mostly focusing on the mental side and like you said you needed to improve on your mental strength; i have mentioned doing the same on my blog.
ReplyDeleteI never would have categorized you as mentally weak by the way you handle most situations. But it is awesome to see you write about something that is a personal struggle. I'd love to see how you progressive and I can't wait to talk to you in person about this. It seems like you actually enjoy this topic and care for where it can take you. Why don't you figure out a way to poll people and see what the most common weaknesses are or something of that sort? That would be very interesting. Great work though
ReplyDeleteSheena, I think this is a very interesting topic. I can't wait to see how you see (or see the need of improvement of) mental toughness in your own life! I'm sure that over the next month you will have many instances of mental toughness and mental weakness, and I know that will make for a great blog! It could be very interesting as Jake said to see what sort of conditions make others mentally tough or weak. See how they compare or contrast to each other and your own personal strengths and weaknesses! Great job so far!
ReplyDeleteHave you read Elizabeth's blog? You should compare notes since you are kind of discussing the same ideas. Also, besides sports, what areas of mental toughness do you need? Is it mental toughness to learn about Freud or to watch THELMA AND LOUISE?
ReplyDeleteSheena, what role models of yours use this take on mental toughness and how have they influenced you?
ReplyDeleteShe, I like how through your research you were able to give advice as to how to have mental strength. I agree with Jay, I would love to see you talk about your mental toughness. Are there times when your mentality is weaker or stronger than normal? What is it affected by?
ReplyDeleteI love how you compared the two different views on mental toughness! This is so fitting for all of our lives right now with trying to stay strong through the college process. Interesting to see how mental toughness changes from one aspect of life to another. Can't wait to keep reading!
ReplyDeleteMaybe you can start researching more about your mental toughness through looking more into those six elements! I think this topic will be good for you to explore. Everyone is mentally weak at times and it's good to be reminded and learn hot to be stronger. Great job Sheena! And great research!
